Next Super Smash Bros General Speculation Thread

Meowscarada is definitely up there for a Gen 9 pick, there's a lot to work with as a street performer trickster "magician" that would be cool to see but by the same token we can get Undead Akuma Ape, Not!X and Not!Zero, Ogre with a big bonk stick, Pink Gremlin with a big bonk hammer, a Dragon Bike (Forma de Pasada or Futuro), String Cheese Money Surfer Dude, Carnival Dancer Duck, Not!Godzilla, Gardevoir and Gallade's killer robot child and several others that'd be pretty damn neat.

There's so so so many good picks that it's hard to give a definite "yes" to any of them because you really gotta just pick one. It's a rare scenario where you can give a vague "something from this thing" answer but actually have it be understandable for once.

But the solution is of course to make another Pokken

I'd definitely be down with Meowscarada. One of the rare times I'd actually like a pokemon added in Smash (helps I realluy like S/V and S/V has some banger music I'd love in Smash)

I want Lokix

Look at this motherfucker
I'd be very cool with Meowscarada too, partly because they remind me of NiGHTS

I feel like I can't get excited for any particular pokemon choice beforehand, not because they are bad choices but mainly because I've been through the song and dance of "This is totally going to be the popular new pokemon in smash" revolving door so many times before.

Kinda hope we get a non-starter just to shake things up

Gholdengo Goes for Gold!
gholdengo-pokemon.gif

But yeah Gholdengo is a silly creature and I'd love for it to make the cut.

I felt incredibly seen when they made Meowscarada, a gay cat thief, so I wouldn't accept anything else really.

EDIT: Not true actually. Iron Valiant would make me go crazy

Good timing, I was waiting for a post so I could rant lol. AND it's stage related!

This isn't speculation about the next game, though, it's speculation about Ultimate. I was thinking about the 17 Vs. stages that never got added into the game despite the "Everyone is Here" aspect of the character roster. It's probably one of my biggest gripes with Ultimate since the base game had so painfully few new stages, presumably since all the work went to bringing back old ones, and then they still missed quite a few, and supposed logic behind the cuts are usually a little sketchy.

Here's the list and my guesses as to why they weren't brought back, whether in Ultimate or in general.

[64]
Planet Zebes: - functionally and thematically similar to Brinstar
Sector Z - functionally similar to Corneria

[Melee]
Flat Zone - merged into Flat Zone X
Icicle Mountain - they hate vertical scrolling stages and Ice Climber
Mushroom Kingdom - good luck telling it apart from the 64 version
Mute City - made redundant on all accounts by Port Town Aero Dive, SNES Mute City, and Big Blue, plus it would've been more difficult to visually upgrade since it's a giant racing stage
Poke Floats - I honestly have no clue. Maybe they had no idea how to design BF/Omega versions, but that didn't stop them from doing one for OGA in Smash 4

[Brawl]
Flat Zone 2 - merged into Flat Zone X
Pictochat - replaced by Pictochat 2
Rumble Falls - they HATE vertical scrolling stages

[3DS]
Pac-Maze - They didn't want to translate its 3DS-specific gimmick. It couldn't have been that hard, though, surely...
Rainbow Road - I ACTUALLY have no fucking idea. Why is this gone??? Huh????

[Wii U]
Jungle Hijinx - gimmick incompatible with Stage Morph (Just make it unselectable when it's active?)
Orbital Gate Assault - I think everyone hated this messy stage lol
Miiverse - Miiverse doesn't exist on Switch (Understandable why it was cut, but like... we should've had Miiverse on Switch)
Pyrosphere - Ridley can't be a fighter and a boss (Silly to me, if they cut him, the stage had a lot more going on than Ridley, and Other M Ridley is both a clone and very obviously different-looking)
Wooly World - I remember hearing someone say the weighted platform gimmick broke in 8-player Smash but I don't know how true that is. Otherwise I have no idea.

---

Out of the list, Rainbow Road is easily the biggest headscratcher. I thought, surely, that there was some sensible reason for it being gone that people don't talk about. But no, it's just gone. They finally got Rainbow Road, an incredibly iconic location for Mario, Nintendo and honestly gaming in general, and then just... cut it. For some reason. I have no idea. I genuinely have no idea.

Wooly World being gone is pretty weird too, and a little sad. All the other Wii U and 3DS stages have apparent problems but that was such a cute stage that just... died.

Rumble Falls is understandable since it's incredibly unpopular and even as an Omega it would be incredibly similar to Kongo Falls (I legit forgot they renamed it to this). Icicle Mountain should've stayed, though - its vibes as a FD or BF stage would've been incredible.

Zebes and Sector Z also bother me since they were so close to having the full 64 roster and cutting stages for thematic reasons is a bit BS considering [SUPER FUCKING MARIO]. Melee Mute City not coming back also was a bummer. None of the other F-Zero stages have the same vibes, but at least MK8's version has them.

Poke Floats actually probably was hard to program, now that I think about it. But surely they knew it was worth it, though. It's a complete mess but unlike Orbital Gate, it's so funny that everyone loves it.

Mushroom Kingdom... Yeah I get that one. There's no name clever enough to make it not incredibly hard to tell it apart from the 64 one.

BONUS STAGE!
Speaking of Mushroom Kingdom... WHERE IS MUSHROOMY KINGDOM 1-2? Why did they only bring back half? What is the point? They didn't put in Smash 3DS either, but it doesn't make sense to also not do it in Ultimate. That's probably the most baffling thing to me besides Rainbow Road. Maybe they didn't know how to make it work with BF/FD toggle or something?

And ftr, my actual guess for why Orbital Gate didn't come back is being difficult to playtest and being very unpopular. It could also have something to do with the hazards toggle, but surely it could just be the Great Fox to make it essentially diet Sector Z.

I'm not too broken up about it being gone, though... but Rainbow Road. Why Rainbow Road...

Poke Floats - I honestly have no clue. Maybe they had no idea how to design BF/Omega versions, but that didn't stop them from doing one for OGA in Smash 4
My guess is that having to update every single model might have been a very tall order, like your guess on Mute City. Poke Floats is a massive stage when you consider every float, after all.

Rainbow Road - I ACTUALLY have no fucking idea. Why is this gone??? Huh????
Likely the same guess as Mute City. Both are giant traveling stages, after all.

Agreed on everything else tho.

Mushroomy 1-2 absolutely fucking sucked ass but the fact that it existed at all is what made Mushroomy Kingdom stand out. Getting the first two most iconic levels was awesome even if they were terrible as stages

Honestly the funniest part of 1-2 was the fact that it was like the only stage where Olimar could kill himself using his Final Smash, provided the stage is scrolled to the point where the bottomless pit is in the middle of the screen.

Iconic.

I always found mushroomy kingdom such a weird stage. Why did they turn 1-1 into a desert?

It was meant to be representative of 1-1 after it had been "abandoned" since 1985.

Orbital Gate Assault - I think everyone hated this messy stage lol
How can anyone hate the coolest stage
<-- played it maybe once, if ever because lol wii u
:061:

Next Smash only has 10 returning stages not counting Final Destination and Battlefield. Which 10 would you want to return

Luigi's Mansion - Perfect aesthetics and it's fun breaking it down lol
Arena Ferox - Just one of my favourite stages as a whole and one of my favourite locations from any FE game. The gimmick is fun too.
Corneria - Has a lot of sentimental value when I played with my brothers. Going onto the guns and breaking them was fun.
Temple - It's kind of the quintessential big stage, it's big but not ridiculously big or filled with tons of empty space or obnoxious obstacles.
Great Bay - This one has a lot of sentimental value as one of my most played in Melee. I like pretty much everything about it.
KOF Stadium - This is just a perfect stage really, no notes.
Shadow Moses - honestly just because of the codecs alone but Shadow Moses is also such a cool location. The spotlights are a fun extra too.
Mute City (Melee) - I loved trying to destroy some of the cars on this one and I miss the aesthetic.
Halberd - probably my most played Brawl stage.
Pac-Maze - it should be in Smash on principle and to beat a long dead horse, why the fuck did they not keep it

Oh hey a stage list!
Stage Roster.png
Bottom three rows are the returning stages.

Row 1: Battlefield, Final Destination, Fungi Mines, Bowser's Castle, New Donk Festival, Haunted Towers, Waluigi Pinball, Diamond City Stadium, Sunset Shore, Gangplank Galleon

Row 2: Koholint Island, Sky Islands, Itorash, Another Dimension, Temple of Sinnoh, Castelia City, Area Zero, Red Canyon, Condor Roost, Kingdom of Altea

Row 3: Niðavellir, Lunar Sanctum, Forest of Hope, Submerged Castle, Gyromite, Smashville Museum, Jogging Route, Bionis's Leg, Saltspray Rig, Hobbiville

Row 4: Sector 2, Murasame Castle, Gluglug Lagoon, Lake Juliet, Hotel Dusk, Radical Highway, Championship Maze, Swampy Highway, The Underground, City Ruins,

Row 5: Skeld, Random

Row 6: Mario Bros, Mario Galaxy, Rainbow Road, Yoshi's Island, Temple, Fountain of Dreams, Corneria, Pokémon Stadium 2, New Pork City, Arena Ferox

Row 8: Wily Castle, Suzaku Castle, Northern Cave, King of Fighters Stadium, Minecraft World, Hollow Bastion

Some of the new stages are more so refreshes of a few old ones, like Forest of Hope just being PM Distant Planet, Temple of Sinnoh being a Legends Arceus version of Spear Pillar, Championship Maze being Pac-Maze but without the 3DS gimmick, and Bionis Leg being Gaur Plain with a half decent layout.

Niðavellir, Saltspray, and the AC Museum are hype. Temple of Sinnoh isn't my first pick for PLA but I'll allow it because it has a Sneasler statue. I'm glad people are still on World Bowser. Radical Highway and City Ruins are good because of who they represent
