The Experience Point Social Thread

When my brother got this game as a kid he got stuck in the starting room for like 20 Minutes because he didn't know how Japanese style doors worked and didn't know how to get out lol
Ok but same!!!!!!

The interiors of that game are built so weird i got stuck on multiple instances lmao

. . .i don't have the excuse of being a child tho :phoenixsweat:

What would be your top 5 games you played for the first time this year?
Going off my playthrough thread:
  1. Astrobot
  2. Hi-Fi Rush
  3. Super Mario Wonder
  4. Transistor
  5. The Last of Us
Probably my most varied Top 5 in a while tbh. I've been doing good attacking the Backlog and not replaying games aside from short runs (KH2 on PS3 to get the menu background and Hollow Knight for our first Multiworld randomizer run—it bugged out and all of the charms had no cost so I was able to just stack 'em all and sweep through the entire game lol).

I've only played two games for the first time this year; Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I've beaten both the base game, but I haven't really... bought or touched their DLC

I think I've also beaten Wo Long at some point to, which would make it... three

People telling me how the Future Redeemed is GOATed though and SoP being a Team Ninja game, its in my good graces for lighting-fast and engaging combat

I bought Granblue Fantasy Relink but haven't played enough to make a worthwhile opinion, plus there's @Bolderousness busting my balls to hop onto Dawntrail MSQ and Enter the Gungeon

2024 has been generally a much weaker year for me IRT playthroughs, compared to 2023 where I really started to get off my ass and do a bunch of stuff. My laptop getting weird around that time pretty much put a stop to what I was doing at the time, and it's been hard to work up the motivation since then

Yeah to be honest I've been kinda stuck in a rut with games i've already played this year, I think Ace Combat 7 and Ghost Trick are my two favorites for this year

5. Dawntrail - At #5 cause it feels like sorta of copout answer cause its an MMO expansion for a game I've been playing for the past five years, however the Story and new content in Dawntrail is excellent and I very much enjoyed my time with it

4. Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe - Probably my favorite 'walking simulator' of all time. Its a genuinely funny and touching game about the illusion of choice and I just felt so endeared by the narration and jokes. The new Ultra Deluxe Content were genuinely a delight delivering even more meta humor on what it means to be a sequel/expansion.

3. Unicorn Overlord - An atlus game that really fed my tactics game itch, I love the use of its overworld, and how it *is* the maps you play on and the squad building is fun to mess around though quite easy to snowball in the late game. Serviceable plot for a Fantasy Strategy game, as it takes a lot of tropes of from Archanea. Character supports are really good as well, and all the characters are romanceable so that's a huge plus.

2. Prey (2017) - A masterclass in the Immersive Sim genre. Prey is a game not only with excellent emergent gameplay where's there are many ways to solve a problem creatively, but the storytelling through the classic computer emails and voice recordings are honestly the nest they've been in the genre, everyone of the NPCs you learn about feel so human. The setting is beautiful, Talos 1 is both a haunting space station and a genuine piece of art. The themes of the game were thought provoking, and while the ending is fun to talk about, it does feel a bit abrupt compared to the detail in everything else.

1. Persona 4 Golden - If I played this game much earlier in my life, it would've been a formative game for me. The cast of characters is very special and give you the close knit of high school friends experience. The mystery and setting is one that I love. The music is an absolute Earworm. The themes of accepting the person that you are, even in the face of your flaws or insecurities is impactful. Its a game that when it ends you wish you had more time to spend with the characters.

I don't because a single hour less of sleep once isn't enough to fuck me over.

I still think it's incredibly stupid as a concept though.

Only thing I'm gonna touch on is the impacts they had.

5. No More Heroes 3: After playing it, I'm amazed NMH 3 exists to this day. I hope they make a 4th one in 2035 so I can get closure on some things. Introduced me to some good music artists. Made me super into ranking systems too, even though the series is a satire on them.

4. Rabbit and Steel. Touhou? FF 14? Good music? Cute bunnies? Yeah.

3. Dawntrail: Might be honeymoon phase for me to put it this high, but Dawntrail's story and themes made me tear up for the first time in years, which is something I didn't think I could do again. That alone puts it up here.

2. Civ 6. 70.3 hours put into it. Made me look more into my korean background as well as world history in general. Also went out of my way to get all 850 songs from both civ 5 and 6, which is both insane and amazing to listen to.

1. Enter the Gungeon: 88.9 hours put into it this year and potentially more. Less a game that had impact on me and more a game that jived with me to the fucking core. Music, control, bosses, moment to moment gameplay, and the rng are all top notch for me

what all Halloween costumes have you worn throughout your life?

Off the top of my head I've been spider-man, a pirate, mario (x2), Batman, air force pilot, Captain America, TF2 Engineer, Beetlejuice, Batman Scarecrow, and the Invisible Man.
