Video Game Book Club - Slay the Princess

🦈 She wont need to wait
Ominous message, but if you want to play an old game and type up a post with your thoughts about it, that's totally okay!

Maybe we could do like, a subthread for Video Game Book Club? I don't know.

he said that cause he literally gifted it to me lol

todays been crazy

I don't think there's much harm in keeping late posts in here, I think there's a lot of value in having them. Even beyond people being late or unable to participate with whatever game is currently the focus for any reason, it can also work in a way that allows for follow-ups/Part 2s. Some games will naturally have a lot of meat to them that can't be fully explored in a short timeframe so someone can give their initial report/post as an "up to where they got to" type deal and then do a follow up if/when they beat the game, or a game might have a lengthy post-game or NG+ or some such that might capture some people and they could feasibly give further thoughts later on about those aspects if they wish. There's room to accommodate people who want to go deeper into the games we touch upon I think, just make sure to start the post off labelling it as a follow-up or a late post on something that was covered already.

The forum makes that so much easier than discord.

A quick bump to say that Slay the Princess is now out for anyone looking to play on console.

Fun timing: it's also on sale on Steam right now, starting today.

Only 20% off but that's something!

EDIT: So excited to see your reactions to Signalis in real time. I'm definitely gonna be participating in that one. It's so good.

I bought Slay the Princess probably not going to start it until after the multiworld a few of us are doing, but looking forward to it

Oh dang, apparently a big free update happened for Slay the Princess as well to coincide with the console releases.

yeah the update is for all the Pristine Cut stuff

funny timing

also sorry for being late on it :linoone: will be playing it soon

Started playing it today, I'll reserve my thoughts for later, but its been real neat so far

Day 2 of Slay the Princess! (I was busy yesterday and couldn't post anything)

I'll probably give this one two weeks to start with, so aim to be done around Monday, November 11th. If we go over that's totally fine.

Anyways, I'm gonna rizz the Princess surely nothing will go wrong because of this.

Got a bit into the game (played a little under two hours). Don't really know what I can and can't say, but I jive with this game. I'm really excited to see where it goes.

It's also exactly what I needed after Astrobot lol

well finally decided to play it, to much caves of qud but plan to wind this out during the weekend

so first off the dialogue is amazing, the narrator quite very much is done with the shit you try to do and it turns out i have a companion voice as the hero to. i didn't really buy like...jack shit of what the narrator said as it really did just come across as "ultimatum because i said it so

so honestly i just went into the basement without grabbing anything to see wats up. and the voice of the hero made a lot of good points of... how the fuck does the princess not have a name nor eaten anything and jack shit. i wasn't interested in anything so focused on getting her out

tried to go upstairs to look for something but the narrator literally barred me in and continued the ultimatum and then the princess decided to fucking eat her own arm off like a wolf, that threw me out a bit.

dude tosses in the dagger from upstairs probably one more time for his story but well...fuck his story, continued the job and the voice of the hero kept talking about how she is literally unnerved and smiling after everything. then i'm assuming the narrator forced my bodys actions to attempt to stab her but thankfully had resisting options in the dialogue.

it did eventually work but uh... from what i also assume is the narrators actions he caused the princess to fucking stab me and i died. i also noticed how...fucking weird our hand was it was like a really rough claw with really curly claws

in any case that led to chapter 2 apparently and the narrator resetted or talked about anohter world or whatever for his purposes and the voice of hte hero talked about how it was all consequence free. and then we got a smitten dude whos just a horny bard popping up for the journy

despite that i just took the opportunity to bail, cause if its just gonna be a repeat of wat happened i think i prefer to just bail. tried to force me back around to the cabin still bailed.

then uh...apparently he lost control of the story? cause the narrator couldnt' teleport me back, my screen got textureless and then several hands came out wanting a empty vessel which i assume couldn't be because i have 2 voices in my head or something and then they ripped me apart and i got the denial achievement

10/10 start would start again

repeating to do the same thing i did last time as i wondered what would happen if i did the same path but instead of just gtofing and....oh you can't resist again

also...is the princess a vampire? cause with the fangs and claws it...comes across as that, or lycianish

oh and now after getting vicericated by her i now restart again and i have a new guy of the opportunist, hello there dude

i like him, he beats the smitten dude from last time

....oh its a...its a tree hut now... huh

also apparently were distorting from the narrator this time... poggers fuck that guy

and now shes talking different to after trying to examine myself in that mirror and getting told by a idiot, whelp this is probably gonna go poorly

hey i know you remember that but i literally tried to stop it blame the narrator

also i really like this opportunist dude, just all about discussing looking through options and such thats my internal voice alright

...is....is she a werewolf now? i thought that was wat she was before but shes extremely different now

huh... so the narrator isn't part of the whole world warping thing but the voices me and the princess do... fascinating
opportunist: "i'm just glad we could put all this behind us!" me to buddy

...she wasn't locked up?

hero and opportunist are just bickering about who goes up first cause we are lacking trust here dued to the froced shank in the back and the narrator just feels like hes having a fucking anerysm :wheeze:

huh and then she kills me through a bad fall... not what i expected tbh
hero: "why did she do that? we were going to help her!"
opportunist: "its what i would of done"
hero: "have you considered not being that?"
opportunist: "course not its what keeps us alive"

also damn both opportunist and her are just planning to back stab eachother wow

hero: "theres one problem if she was in front of us she would of gotten to the blade first"
....hes right

opportunist is also rather forthright on it to

WAIT SHE BROKE HER OWN BACK? IS SHE A FUCKING MORON?

were both just stuck in the dungeon... beautiful

only ones happy is th enarrator :wheeze:

............ the uh... hands came back and they uh... took her, so by vessel... they didn't want me. they wanted the princess.

huh and the narrators gone to just me and hero

oh wait opportunisit is here to and he stated were top of the pecking order lol

hero: "theres...something dreadful about it..."
opportunist: "well if he thinks its bad i'm with him"

ya so that is what he looks like, protag is a monster himself. no wonder the narrator wants you to slay the princess thats kinda the job of a monster, some hero we are

proceed to the cabain in the empty ass void and see a girl with worms... whelp ok "you recognize the entity that dwells in the spaces between" ... huh, so the princess is a vessel to...whatever this thing is, and it seems the entity is talking about the end of the world or something

does seem freindly, and protag actually recognizes it when i had him gtfo to. its puppeteering the princess and using her to speak with its thousand arms

protag: "i don't know what i am"
it: "i think you are like me"
...hm

"this one is hope marred by bitterness and betrayal. she could see the end of the tunnel, and the door was closed on her. she will make for a rightous heart" girl i don't think thats a good heart

oh wait is the princess fucking dead? telling me not to mourn her

protag "is this the end of the world?"
it: "how can the world have ended if we are talking?"

...fair enough

so... this thing just got conscious the moment everything got sent here... or i guess when i tried to gtfo, and it yearns to be free as well

aaaaah that explains so... this entity is the princess, and the princesses are like...visages for a role

the vessel is a creature of perceptoin? can make you forget if only you believe her to be able to.... i don't get it

oooooh she wants me to bring her more perseptives

OH WERE BUILDING A HUMAN, BUILD YOUR OWN PRINCESS :WHEEZE:

she herself doesn't know what she'll do if we bulid her full...

"she asks that i tell you to remember her"
i mean...i would like to

"you won't"
*everything grows dark and you die*

:wheeze: beautiful

I haven't played since that first night so uh...

All in favor of extending the amount of time on this one?

I'm thinking a month per game's probably more realistic.

After finally getting in the right headspace for it (I was very stressed out this month, and I figured this game wouldn't be relaxing, per se), I started playing Slay The Princess earlier this week on Tuesday. Today, I finished the game.

Despite the title of the game, I didn't want to kill whoever this Princess was. But I wasn't going to pretend that I should just go for that right out of the gate, since I didn't actually know anything about her. After arguing with the Narrator about how weird and unpleasant this whole situation was, I was convinced to keep going to the cabin. The Voice of the Hero was as nonplussed as I was about this whole situation.

I went down the stairs of the cabin without the knife, but instead of freeing the Princess right away I wanted to ask her a few things. Her answers gave me the impression that she was as in the dark about the whole situation as I was, including her own identity. In particular, when the Princess asked me if I knew why I was sent to slay her (as I told her that was my mission, but didn't know what to believe), I stayed silent, as I didn't have a real answer. She correctly deduced that I wasn't even told, and that forces outside both of our control were forcing us into this situation.

After that though, when presented with the option to say "what if you and I stayed down here for a little while longer?" that felt too foolish to select. This is because of something that stood out to me earlier: she avoided answering "what food did you eat this whole time?" This gave me the impression she wasn't human, but despite the Narrator's interjections, I didn't necessarily think that meant she was a bad or evil person. Nonetheless, if I was right and the Princess wasn't human, then she could be stronger than she looked, and I felt telling the Princess to sit and wait, longer than she already waited, would not sit well with her.

I chose instead to silently go back upstairs to get the knife. I wasn't actually doing this with murderous intent, but if she could keep talking, I could use the knife to free her, at least that was my thought process anyway. Doing this caused the Princess to threaten me, confirming my suspicions about her being in control of whether I lived or died.

Still, when I went back downstairs with the knife and saw her dismembered arm on the floor, I was pretty unnerved. Instead of proceeding right away, I called out for her, which she responded to by daring me to come closer. I decided to close the door behind me so she couldn't escape, hoping that my knife would at least let me coerce some more questions out of her. Still, approaching her in the darkness caused her to get the jump on me, killing me.

...and then Chapter II started. "Oh... it's that kind of game, huh", I thought, dreading whatever was next.

I'd learn that Chapters II and III would be variable later, but for now this was Chapter II: The Beast. The Narrator didn't know what happened to us to cause us to reincarnate, but a new voice called The Hunted joined The Hero in our musings. I realized that this game was gonna have voices representing our previous deaths join us, which was pretty morbid. Still, armed with the knowledge that I can come back from death, I decided I would stick to my mission of simply finding out as much as I could about the Princess before making any major decisions.

The cabin was very different, having more of a jungle theme. I once again chose to go downstairs without a knife. Despite the protests of the Narrator and the Hero and Hunted voices, I still wanted to try talking. However, in her new beast form, the Princess wasn't very interested. Instead of trying to fight her or even talk, I wanted to listen to what she might have to say, so I chose to lay still. Somewhat predictably, the Princess wasn't having it. Unpredictably, she chose to eat me, which was very freaky.

Inside her stomach, I asked her more questions, including why she didn't just leave after killing me. I learned that she couldn't, even after devouring my heart and wearing my skin. The cabin seemed enchanted to keep her locked up, which made me sad. Despite options to defy the Princess or bargain with her, due to her avoiding most of my other questions, I chose to just die in her stomach, hoping the next reincarnation would bring me into circumstances where I could do so again.

Chapter III: The Woods started, and I was freaked out immediately, as it seemed the Princess was with us, and we were with her. The Voice of the Broken joined us this time, clearly traumatized by the nature of the death I chose to accept. Despite the peaceful tone of the unseen Princess, I wanted to ask her, sincerely, why she was being nice to me. She suddenly yelled that she couldn't go back to the fear and the hunger and the pain, and that it would be better to stay like this. Realizing we were "fused", I held onto the unpleasant thoughts returning to me, causing me to separate from the Princess and let me be my own person again. It was then that I saw the Princess had somehow become the woods, and they had become her.

I chose to cut her free, as I didn't want to hurt her but I didn't want to be her, either. She admitted that she didn't think we would do that, but then arms came out of nowhere, enveloping the Princess, and taking the whole of our surroundings with it.

For the first time, I could look in the mirror and see ourselves. We weren't human, but we were... something. I didn't know what to make of this, but this led to the first meeting with Her.

She was incredibly cryptic, seeming to be some sort of cross-dimensional immortal eldritch being. I was worried about the Princess, but She said there was no returning the Princess now that she was a part of Her. As freaky as this being was, I also felt She was operating on different morality than "normal" morality, so calling Her actions into question felt useless. Still, when told to "gather more vessels" and let my memories be erased, I resisted, deciding to try waiting forever. She told me it was useless and that I'd return anyway... and the game closed itself. This freaked me out enough to put the game down for several days, only picking it back up Friday night.

As I didn't save my progress at all, I prepared to repeat my steps to reach Her again, but to my shock I was booted right back to see Her. She observed that I had come back, just like She though I would. With no choice left, I let Her erase my memories, causing Her to tell me the Princess hoped I would remember her, but I wouldn't. Very chilling.

And that's how my very first "route" was Wounded Wild.

I typed up a whole lot, so I'll post the next parts in a couple of separate posts.

Continued:

I was back to the very start, at Chapter 1. I still didn't want to kill her, so I tried leaving this time. Unfortunately, the Narrator forced all my paths to go back to the cabin, so I entered again.

Like last time I entered without the knife, but this time I decided to pick that choice I thought would be a big mistake, the whole "let's both stay down here for a while" one. I was right: it was a *horrible* choice, as the Princess threatened me in a chilling tone of voice. I decided to go back upstairs, lock the door, and block the door with the table. Despite her pounding of the door, I chose to go to sleep. When I woke up later, the door was wide open and the table moved. Then, with my body completely paralyzed, the Princess's approach and mere presence caused my body to shut down, killing me.

Chapter II: The Nightmare started, and this time we were joined by the Voice of The Paranoid. Despite all of our fear, I still wanted to use this opportunity to learn more about the Princess, knowing we'd reincarnate if we died anyway. I once again went down the cabin without the knife.

When presented with the choice between following two paths at the bottom, I chose to stay still, knowing the Princess would find me anyway. Her presence was enough to shut down my body again, but The Paranoid successfully kept our body alive. I felt bad using the opportunity to keep asking questions, but that's what I did. I avoided calling her a lunatic or calling into question whether she'd let us live, the former didn't feel right and the latter wasn't important to me. Despite poor The Paranoid's efforts to keep us alive, I chose let the Princess take us into her nightmare, causing her to open her mask.

Like other visual novels I've read, like The House in Fata Morgana, the Princess showed us her horrifying backstory and history, but was using it to try to hurt me and break me. Instead, learning the nature of her existence only made me sadder. I loved this sequence, it's very beautiful and haunting.

The real terror was that Chapter III became "A Moment of Clarity", with all the overlapping chapter numbers blotting out the screen in a freaky way. Even freakier, all other possible personifications of my deaths were all present, all at once, even ones I hadn't done yet. I was happy to see that almost all of them hated the Narrator, though, which was starting to become my own opinion.

I proceeded forward to the "cabin", with a single knife. The unavailable choices presented to me unnerved me, but I took the knife on the hill. A hole opened up, revealing the Princess, with arms like Hers and a gaping maw where her head would normally be. After taunting us that there was nothing we could do, that among other things she took our very will, and that we would spread fear everywhere we went, I took her hand to let her out.

Upon emerging she simply said "I didn't expect to feel so... tired". The arms of Her appeared again, whisking her and the surroundings away like last time.

After all that, I was told my memories were returned to me, and it became clear at this point that the new mission was to basically Do More Routes. Despite all the flowery and thought-provoking language, I was skeptical if I was gonna enjoy this game by the end. Being told, in a roundabout way, "get lots of endings to get to The Real Ending" was discouraging. Was I gonna be forced to make decisions I didn't really want to get to The Real Stuff? Thankfully, it wouldn't be so bad by the end, but at the time I wasn't so sure about the game and what it (seemingly) was turning out to be.

And that's how my second "route" was A Moment of Clarity".

The game started picking up for me here, with a lot to think about and consider.

The next couple of parts are shorter so hopefully I can squeeze them both in one post this time.

Continued:

Knowing that getting more routes was basically the new main mission of the game, I decided to see what would happen if I just let the Princess go immediately. No fuss, I just let her free. Would she actually end the world?

Well, I don't know because this time, the Narrator directly intervened. They intervened in subtle ways before, but this time, he explicitly took control of my body and forced me to try to stab her. Thankfully, you can choose hidden options to warn the Princess and to resist killing her with the knife. Considering what the Princess is truly capable of, it's ambiguous if she killed me with the knife apologetically of her own free will, or if the Narrator made her do it. Either way, I die, and Chapter II: The Damsel started up.

Joined by the annoying Voice of The Smitten (I get the feeling he was written to make fun of people who immediately free the Princess on their very first playthrough), we go back after being reborn. I once again don't carry the knife downstairs, keen to ask the Princess some more questions. Unfortunately, as sweet as she seems, she also seemed unnaturally subservient. When asked what she wanted, she replied that she "just want [me] to be happy!" When I asked what *she* wanted, she desperately repeated herself in a more strained voice, which creeped me out but didn't surprise me. I had the option to tell her that *surely* there's something *she* wanted, but decided not to. Given what I knew about the Princess, she just wanted to leave and she didn't have to tell me, I'd figured out that much. I choose to go upstairs.

The Narrator thinks this is ridiculous and intentionally locks the door. Strangely, when I choose to open it, the Narrator is forced to comply, allowing me and the Princess to go free. This seemed like a straightforward good ending, were it not for Her arms appearing to whisk away the Princess again. Another vessel delivered, I suppose. No idea if she would have ended the world otherwise.

And that's how my third route was the Damsel.

I noticed my previous route had something of a romantic bent to it, which made me wonder if I could do the same general actions of freeing the Princess, but while making it clear it wasn't romantic.

Instead of letting her go right away, I asked the Princess the usual questions first, like in my first playthrough. After that, I chose to free her, but making it clear "Don't make me regret this" to remove any warmth. The Princess was thankful and not too warm-sounding, however we were locked in the basement by the Narrator again, and found myself in the same situation where the Narrator took control of my body to try to kill the Princess.

This time, however, the "Resist" option after warning the Princess was not selectable. An earlier conversation with Her revealed that She was removing options so that I couldn't repeat routes over and over again. This was the first time I saw it in action.

With no other choice, I was forced to try to kill the Princess. She was upset, saying "A betrayal of will is still a betrayal", killing me after I landed a strike against her.

Chapter II: The Witch started up. This time I was joined by The Opportunist, who liked weighing options to see whatever would benefit us the most. He bugged me but whatever, it was time to visit the Princess again.

At the cabin, she called out to us very bitterly. She wasn't happy about what happened, but was willing to leave with us, acknowledging, like in other routes, that she can't leave the cabin alone anyway. The Opportunist gave us the idea of letting her go in front of us, but as someone who was not afraid to die, I went ahead in front of her.

Sure enough, the Princess struck our back violently enough that we fell and paralyzed ourselves. The Princess taunted us for being gullible, but she ended up falling back too, becoming paralyzed ourselves. I was hoping to ask if, now that she paralyzed us, would she be willing to carry us outside so we could both leave, but she could no longer move, so it would have been fruitless. This apparently counted as a "death" of sorts, as Her arms appeared and whisked away the Princess again.

Meeting with Her again, she revealed this might be the last time we see each other, as she only needed one more vessel to collect, before "gravity" would cause all the Princess' other selves to coalesce around Her. Despite asking if She wanted anything specific, she just said the next vessel would be "revealing" for me.

And that's how my fourth route was the Witch.

Last part coming up next.

Last part:

This time, the choice to go down to the cabin basement without the knife was crossed out. She was forcing me to take it downstairs, so I did.

Like I thought she would, the Princess was far colder and less friendly, seemingly aware I had a knife before she even saw me. I talked with her the same way, still, going through the talking point of "I was told to kill you". Unlike when I talked without the knife, I explained that, because I wasn't told how she was supposed to end the world, I trusted her this time. I certainly didn't trust the Narrator anymore. She told me to put down the knife, and I did.

I decided to free her shortly afterwards with the knife, and, like last time, the Narrator took over my body and forced me to try to kill her. This time I was allowed to both warn the Princess and resist the Narrator's control again. Unlike last time, however, the Princess, upon realizing I was being controlled, unceremoniously took my knife and slit my throat. Morbid, but understandable.

Chapter II The Prisoner started. I was joined by the Voice of The Skeptic, the one who was most like me in that he clearly has had enough of the Narrator's shit, though he didn't trust the Princess either. In any case, I go back to the Cabin. Normally the Narrator forces me to do stuff, but this time The Skeptic forced me to go downstairs with the knife, even though I didn't want to, which made me nervous.

The Princess was locked up in a different way this time. She had chains on both her arms, and also around her head. Knowing how she freed herself many other times, I feared the worst about what could happen this time.

The Princess and I talked again, with her being bitter like with the Witch route. Eventually, I sat down, and I once again gave up the knife, sliding it to her, as I was unafraid to die as usual.

And then... she cuts her head off. The description was gnarly and visceral, making me cringe with fear. Amusingly, the Narrator was happy, thinking that this meant we slayed the Princess like he wanted. But I and The Skeptic had my doubts. I was presented with the option to take the head of the Princess with me, so I chose that.

Sure enough, we walked through the door of the cabin, successfully for once, and the Princess was happy that her trust in us was not unfounded. Sadly, she's whisked away by Her, like all the other Princesses.

And that's how my fifth route was the Prisoner.

This time, She wasn't who greeted us, but rather the Narrator. He explained that we were The Long Quiet, the he created us, and that he wants to kill Her because She is the embodiment of change, and "change" includes death. When I pointed out that death was natural and an important part of living, they dismissed me, saying I didn't know what "real" death was, which was true. I did keep coming back to life. But I still thought the Narrator was naive, and, after exhausting all of the questions, taunted them by saying I would not slay the princess like he wanted, with them being bitter but ultimately accepting of this.

The finale of Slay The Princess is incredibly freaky, mostly because, despite being told She was the embodiment of change, I had my reservations that She was this all-powerful being, no matter how many naked Princesses Her body was made out of. An unexpected "fight" sequence started when She got annoyed with my questions, saying that questions are reserved for those who do not accept the truth in front of them.

I decided to go with the "appeal to humanity" route, as this was no longer an ideological battle to me, it was just a horrible situation where we were forced to kill each other again and again and that we should both want out of it. Several frightening moments happened where She took on different aspects of the Princess to prove me wrong and dismiss me, and, interestingly enough, She only did this with routes I did myself, like Wounded Wild and Damsel, never going for other routes I hadn't done. I wonder if I would have seen other aspects of the Princess in this "fight" or if they only show up if I find them myself.

When I chose "You keep trying to dismiss or change my perspective, but how can you claim to want to work together if you don't also change with me?" or something like that. Unexpectedly, this caused the Voice of The Hero to return, which made me happy. With his help, we were able to return to "the very beginning" by going into Her heart, where "we" supposedly met the Princess for the very first time, allowing us to leave the "fight" entirely.

This sequence, where we find the "first cabin", felt like a great payoff for all my efforts to try to understand the Princess as thoroughly as possible, without trying to intentionally hurt her, as well. After walking downstairs without the knife, The Princess explained that she does not want to be Her, and I told her I didn't want to be a god either. After talking some more, I decided it was time for us both to leave.

That last look at the cabin was very heartfelt, where we would finally be leaving all this ugliness behind, but still nervous about the unknown world beyond. I reassured her that I didn't know what was out there either, and as we held hands, we opened the cabin door and ended the game.

This game was super cool. For a second I thought I wasn't going to like it after the "true" goal of the game revealed itself, but thankfully it knew when to draw the line.

Despite the game giving me the tools and motivation to see all the different permutations of the game by doing lots of different choices, I have decided to leave it at that. I'm happy with my final playthrough and don't feel like doing more of it, and I consider that a compliment, not a knock against Slay The Princess.

This game is essentially making a love story out of a trolley problem, and as weird as that sounds, I think the game creators succeeded. Very cool all around.
